Measures the dispersion of pigment in a liquid coating by drawing the sample down a precision tapered groove and reading where agglomerates appear.

Poor pigment dispersion shows up as reduced gloss, weak colour strength, poor hiding power and specks in the final film — but only after the batch is made.
The grind gauge catches it during manufacture, in under a minute.
The gauge is a hardened steel block with a groove machined from a defined depth down to zero.
Sample is placed at the deep end and drawn down with a scraper.
Where the groove depth falls below the size of the largest agglomerates, the particles break the film surface and a visible speckled pattern appears.
The reading at that point is the fineness of grind, expressed in microns or on the Hegman scale.
