Who buys laboratory equipment in Ghana

Ghana's demand for laboratory equipment comes from four distinct buyers, and each one procures differently:

• Senior high schools under the Ghana Education Service, equipping physics, chemistry, biology and general science laboratories, often in batches across a region rather than one school at a time.
• Technical universities — the former polytechnics, converted under the Technical Universities Act in 2016 — which need engineering, civil, mechanical and electrical laboratory equipment at degree level.
• TVET institutes under the Commission for TVET, equipping workshops for welding, carpentry, plumbing, electrical installation, automotive and construction trades.

Shipping to Tema and Takoradi

Laboratory equipment from India reaches Ghana through Tema, the main container port serving Accra, or Takoradi for projects in the Western Region. Shipments leave from Mundra or Nhava Sheva by sea, or by air into Kotoka International Airport when a tender deadline is tight and the consignment is small enough to justify it.

Plan the schedule in three parts, not one: manufacturing time, packing and inland movement to the Indian port, and sea transit. Institutions that budget only for "delivery" are the ones caught out when a term starts.

Import documentation and conformity

Ghana operates a conformity assessment programme through the Ghana Standards Authority, under which certain categories of imported goods require a Certificate of Conformity issued before shipment by an approved body such as Intertek, SGS or Bureau Veritas. Whether a particular consignment of laboratory equipment falls inside a regulated category depends on the products in it, so confirm the position for your specific items with the GSA or the inspection body before the goods are shipped — a consignment that arrives without a required certificate faces delays, penalties or rejection at the port.

5. What spares are held? Ask for a spares list with lead times for heaters, motors, seals and sensors.
6. Is the quote CIF Tema or FOB? Two quotes are not comparable until this is stated.
