Laboratory Apparatus for Tanzania School Tenders

Most laboratory orders that reach Tanzania are not placed by the school. They are placed by a trading company in Dar es Salaam or Arusha that has won, or is bidding for, a government or donor-funded tender and needs a factory behind it. That company has a bill of quantities written to the NECTA practical syllabus, a deadline, and a procurement officer who will check every line on arrival. This guide is written for that reader: what the syllabus actually requires, how the apparatus is grouped in a Tanzanian schedule, and what has to be in place before a container sails from India.

What the NECTA practicals require

Tanzanian secondary schools work to the National Examinations Council syllabus, with practical papers in physics, chemistry and biology at CSEE level in Form IV and again at ACSEE for Form VI. The practical is sat under examination conditions, which decides quantities more than anything else in the specification: if a centre enters 120 candidates, it needs 120 metre rules and 120 thermometers, not a demonstration set. Schedules usually separate apparatus by subject and then by experiment, which is why a Tanzanian BOQ reads as a list of named items with a range or a least count rather than as a catalogue of products. A supplier who quotes to that structure is easy to evaluate; one who answers with a catalogue is not.

Physics: the heaviest and most itemised section

Physics carries the longest list. Measurement comes first — metre rules, half-metre rules, vernier callipers, micrometer screw gauges, spring balances in several ranges, standard masses and triple beam balances, all from our mechanics labware, which also covers pendulum work, pulleys, inclined planes and force boards. Electricity is the section where schedules are most detailed and where a missing item stops the practical: ammeters and voltmeters in the syllabus ranges, rheostats, resistance boxes, cells and holders, plug keys, jockeys, metre bridges, potentiometers and connecting leads in quantity, listed under our electricity and cell lab range. Optics needs converging and diverging lenses, plane and curved mirrors, glass blocks, prisms, optical pins and ray boxes from the optics range; magnetism needs bar and horseshoe magnets, plotting compasses and solenoids from the magnetism range; and heat needs thermometers, calorimeters, immersion heaters and conduction apparatus from heat and engines.

Chemistry and biology

Chemistry schedules are mostly glassware and are won or lost on two specifications. State borosilicate 3.3 for anything heated and soda-lime where the item is used for storage, and state Class A or Class B for volumetric ware — Class B is entirely adequate for school titration and costs considerably less, so a schedule that leaves it open invites bids that are not comparable. Beyond glassware come bunsen burners with the correct fittings, tripods, gauzes, retort stands, bosses and clamps, spotting tiles, evaporating dishes, balances and reagent bottles; our glassware range and chemistry equipment cover both halves. Biology needs microscopes with LED illumination, which matters where power is intermittent, together with prepared slides, dissecting sets and trays, and specimens. Models carry the teaching where specimens are scarce, and our human anatomy models and microscopes and slides are the two lines most Tanzanian schedules name. Safety is a line in its own right — goggles, coats, eyewash, fire blanket and extinguishers from our laboratory safety range.

Certification, shipping and what arrives at Dar es Salaam

Tanzania operates a pre-export verification programme under the Tanzania Bureau of Standards, and consignments that arrive without a certificate of conformity face a penalty calculated on CIF value and the risk of being held. The certificate is arranged before the container sails, not after it berths, and we handle the inspection and documentation as part of the order rather than leaving it to the importer. Shipments route from Nhava Sheva to Dar es Salaam, with inland delivery to Dodoma, Mwanza, Arusha or Mbeya by road. Realistic timing for a school science tender is four to six weeks manufacturing plus three to four weeks at sea, so an agent working to a delivery date should place the order roughly three months ahead. Packing is to line item, with glassware in compartment cartons inside crates, so the receiving committee can check against the schedule without opening everything. Our certifications page sets out the scheme and what we issue.

Working with us as the importing company

We supply the trading company; we do not bid against it. If you are pricing a tender in Tanzania, send the schedule and we quote line by line against your document, with a product code and specification per line, marking clearly where we propose an equivalent rather than substituting silently. Datasheets are available per product for attachment to your technical bid, and we can supply in neutral packing where your client requires it. What we need from you is the BOQ, the delivery port and inland destination, and the closing date; what you get back is a quotation your evaluation committee can score without rewriting. Our tender supply page sets out the process in full.

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell directly to Tanzanian schools? Our business is supplying importers, distributors and trading companies who serve those schools. We quote to you, not against you. Who arranges the TBS certificate of conformity? We do, as part of the order, with inspection before shipment so the consignment clears without the penalty that applies to uncertified goods. Can you quote against a NECTA-worded schedule? Yes, line by line in the order your document uses, so the evaluation committee can follow it. What are realistic lead times? Four to six weeks manufacturing for a standard school science set, plus three to four weeks sea transit to Dar es Salaam. Can you supply complete school laboratory kits? Yes — physics, chemistry and biology as one consolidated consignment with a single packing list, which is how most Tanzanian school projects are supplied. Do you provide datasheets for our technical bid? Yes, one per product, with specification, code and photograph. Will you supply in neutral packing? Yes, where the end client requires it.

If you are preparing a bid, our department-wise specification guide shows how a laboratory schedule is best structured, and the tender supply overview covers the wider East African picture. Send your schedule to our export team with the port and closing date, and we will return a line-by-line quotation.

Specifying a laboratory or preparing a tender?

Send us your syllabus, scope or BOQ. We will build the item list with the grades, standards and calibration requirements stated against each line, so the quotation you receive is comparable.
