Gas absorption studied in a packed column. A glass column filled with Raschig rings works alongside a feed tank, a CO2 cylinder with regulator, an air regulator with pressure gauge, a rotameter, a receiving tray and connecting pipework. Liquid is metered over the packing while the metered gas and air stream passes upward through the bed, so contact takes place countercurrently. Each flow rate is set independently, letting a class reproduce a range of operating conditions, and the overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient follows from the concentration of gas absorbed into the liquid.
