Pilot scale batch distillation column built to industrial practice, for separating a mixture whose components boil at different temperatures. The charge is heated in the reboiler; repeated condensation and re-evaporation up the column enriches the vapour in the more volatile component, and the packing increases the exchange area and so the mass transfer. Vapour is condensed at the column head and split between distillate and reflux through a globe valve, while residue is drawn off at the end of the run. Temperatures are read at the bottom, the middle and the head of the column, giving the full temperature profile.
