Column for demonstrating distillation on bubble cap trays. The stainless steel column carries seven plates, each fitted with one bubble cap, over an electrically heated reboiler. Vapour leaving the top is condensed in a shell and tube condenser fed from the laboratory overhead tank, and an automatic reflux divider splits the condensate between reflux and distillate at a ratio the student sets. Reflux returns to the column, distillate collects in a receiving tank, and the column is insulated to limit heat loss. Pressure and temperature are instrumented where needed.
