Construction material testing equipment is bought against a standard, not against a catalogue. Every apparatus in a materials laboratory exists to run one procedure from ASTM, EN, BS, AASHTO or IS, and once the test method is named the apparatus is fixed. This guide sets out the equipment material by material with the method each item belongs to, so a site laboratory, a third-party testing house or a project procurement team can build a schedule by listing tests rather than by copying part numbers.

Soil testing equipment

Soil is the largest group in a materials laboratory and the one where apparatus names differ most between suppliers. Specifying by test method removes the ambiguity.

Field and sampling equipment sits alongside: soil sampling tools, hand and power augers, undisturbed sampling tubes, a dynamic cone penetrometer for rapid in-situ strength, a soil colour chart for classification, soil thermometers, and a rainfall simulator where erosion and infiltration studies are part of the scope.

On load measurement, decide once and apply it across the whole order. A proving ring needs no power supply and is calibrated as a complete unit, which suits remote site laboratories. A load cell with digital indicator reads faster and logs to a computer, which suits a permanent testing house. Mixing both across one schedule makes quotations impossible to compare.

Cement and concrete testing equipment

Cement testing and concrete testing are separate groups and are frequently merged into one line item, which is where substitutions start.

Cement. Vicat apparatus for standard consistency and setting time, Le Chatelier moulds for soundness, cube and briquette moulds for mortar strength, standard sand, flow table, and a Blaine air permeability apparatus for fineness. Methods: EN 196-1 and 196-3, ASTM C191 and C109, IS 4031.

Fresh concrete. Slump cone and base plate, compaction factor apparatus, Vee-Bee consistometer, air entrainment meter, concrete temperature meter, and a Marsh cone where grouts and admixtures are assessed. Methods: EN 12350, ASTM C143 and C231.

Hardened concrete. Cube moulds in 150 mm and 100 mm, cylinder moulds, beam moulds for flexure, curing tanks with thermostatic control, a compression testing machine with a flexural attachment, and a splitting tensile jig. Methods: EN 12390-3, ASTM C39, IS 516.

Machine capacity is the line that determines the price of the entire order. A 2000 kN compression testing machine covers 150 mm cubes and 150 x 300 mm cylinders in ordinary strength grades. High-strength concrete and larger specimens need 3000 kN or more, which raises the cost of the machine, its frame and its foundation substantially. State capacity, whether the machine is manually operated or servo controlled, whether the readout is analogue or digital with data output, and whether calibration certificates with stated traceability are supplied at despatch. A concrete compression testing machine without a calibration certificate cannot support a test report that a client will accept.

The sieve shaker is worth deciding on deliberately. A mechanical sieve shaker takes a standard stack and handles routine grading. A gyratory sieve shaker gives truer separation on fine material at a considerably higher cost. State which type, the number of sieves the frame must hold, and the sieve diameter — 200 mm, 300 mm and 450 mm frames are not interchangeable. A laboratory pulveriser is normally required alongside for sample preparation.

Bitumen and asphalt testing equipment

Penetrometer apparatus for penetration grading, ring and ball softening point apparatus, ductility testing machine, Pensky-Martens flash and fire point apparatus, Redwood or Saybolt viscometer, cloud and pour point apparatus, stripping value apparatus, bitumen extractor and centrifuge, and Marshall stability test apparatus with compaction pedestal, hammer and mould set. Methods: ASTM D5, D36, D113, D93 and D6927, with EN 1426 and 1427 in European-specification markets.

Where performance grading is required, a dynamic shear rheometer for the DSR test and a rolling thin film oven are the items to budget for. They are the most expensive equipment in a highway materials laboratory and are usually bought only by central authority labs and large contractors.

Equipment common to the whole laboratory

These are left off schedules routinely and every group above depends on them: hot air ovens sized for the largest specimen, electronic balances at two or three capacities with stated readability, water stills, curing tanks, sample splitters and riffle boxes, trays, trolleys, and stable plinths for any machine that vibrates. Structural and rebar testing — universal testing machines, loading frames, extensometers, strain indicators — should be scheduled as its own group rather than folded in.

Specifying for an export order

Five details prevent almost every dispute we see on an international shipment:

  • Power supply. State voltage, frequency and phase for the destination — 230 V 50 Hz and 110 V 60 Hz machines are built differently and cannot be swapped on arrival. State the plug type required.
  • Standard and edition. ASTM, EN, BS, AASHTO or IS, with the year, for every line item.
  • Capacity and least count for every machine, gauge and balance.
  • Calibration certificates and traceability at despatch, and the recalibration interval expected afterwards.
  • Spares and consumables for the first two years — moulds, gauges, abrasive charges, filter papers and seals — quoted with the main order rather than after it.

Packing matters as much as the specification. Machines are packed for sea freight in wooden cases to ISPM 15, with load frames braced and dial gauges shipped separately. Ask for the packing list, net and gross weights and case dimensions before the order is confirmed, so customs documentation and site handling can be arranged in advance.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment does a site laboratory need for earthworks control?

A hot air oven, balances, a sieve set with shaker, Atterberg limit apparatus, Proctor compaction moulds and rammers, a CBR apparatus with load frame, and a sand replacement or core cutter set for in-situ density. That covers routine earthworks acceptance testing; triaxial and consolidation belong in a permanent laboratory.

What capacity compression testing machine is required for concrete cubes?

2000 kN is the standard specification for 150 mm cubes and 150 x 300 mm cylinders in ordinary grades. Higher capacities are needed for high-strength concrete and large specimens, and they increase the cost of the machine and its foundation significantly.

Can equipment be supplied to ASTM or EN dimensions rather than IS?

Yes. Mould sizes, sieve apertures and specimen dimensions differ between standards, so the method must be stated on the order. We manufacture to ASTM, EN, BS, AASHTO and IS dimensions and mark the applicable standard on the equipment.

Why does a sand replacement apparatus need a calibrating container?

The test compares the mass of sand filling the excavated hole with the known bulk density of that sand. The calibrating container establishes that density for the sand actually being used, and without it the in-situ density result has no basis.
